Scottish spelling variant of Stewart [q.v.]
Stuart is thought to be the more favoured spelling in Scotland (Whyte and ONC), although Black cites a mention of the spelling "Stuart" dating from 1429. The name was introduced, or re-introduced, from France into Scotland in the 16th century by Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots.
In the 1841 Census of Aberdeenshire, the spelling Stewart outnumbers Stuart by 2:1. |
