Notes: |
Scottish, derived from "sti weard" or "steward", the person who looked after the domestic animals in large medieval households and, in later times, took care of all domestic affairs.
Whyte and ONC suggest that the spelling Stuart [q.v.] is more favoured in Scotland. However, in the 1841 Censu of Aberdeenshire, Stewart outnumbers Stuart by 2:1. |
