Scottish, derived from the English Huntingdonshire surname, originally a local place-name meaning "garlic island". Brought to Scotland by King David in the 12^th Century when he was the Earl of Huntingdon.

Occurs infrequently in the 1841 Census of Aberdeenshire together with the spelling variation Ramsey.
