French and English form of the Latin name Laurentius, "man from Laurentum". The place-name, Laurentum, may have been named from laurus, the "laurel bush".

In old documents in Latin, the form Laurentius may be used for Laurence/Lawrence, with appropriate case endings.

Lawrence is now the generally preferred spelling in English-speaking communities.
