Notes:

English, from Hebrew "to descend" or "flowing down" from which the River Jordan was named. Originally a name given to a child, of either sex, baptised with water brought back from the River Jordan by Crusaders in the 12th century.

The modern revival of the forename is possibly from the surname which was itself derived from the baptismal name. The female version has been only of occasional use.
