English, from Hebrew "to descend" or "flowing down" from which the River Jordan was named. Originally a name given to a child, of either sex, baptised with water brought back from the River Jordan by Crusaders in the 12^th century.

The modern revival of the forename is possibly from the surname which was itself derived from the baptismal name. The female version has been only of occasional use.
