Old English, derived from Roman forename Hadrianus, "a man from Hadria", a town in northern Italy.  Apart from the Roman Emperor, it was also the name of several Popes.

Hadrianus or Adrianus was used in older documents as the Latinized form of Hadrian or Adrian [q.v.], the later being the preferred form for many centuries.
