Scottish and Irish, the Anglicized spelling of Fearghas, Gaelic, "man (of) vigour", according to ONC. Whyte suggests the meaning was the Gaelic "super choice".  Chambers gives both!

The derivative forename Ferguson ["son of Fergus"] occurs twice as frequently as Fergus in the 1841 Census of Aberdeenshire.
