Cian (M)>

Cian (male)

Variants:Cain (M) Charles (M) Kean (M) Keane (M)
Feminine form:Ciannait (F)

Source(s): The Oxford Names Companion, OUP
Personal communication [MS]
Notes:

Irish Gaelic, from Old Gaelic "ancient".  Anglicized as Kean/Keane.  A correspondent [MS] has an Irish ancestor whose birth name early in the 19th century was Cian but later records had him as Keane, then Cain and eventually Charles.  This ilustrates how records, especially in rural areas, were spelt at the whim of the recording scribe.
