Irish. This Gaelic form of Mary [q.v.] is the vocative case and has often been used in the mistaken belief that this is the "correct" way to spell the name. The nominative case is Màiri and should be used in Gaelic.  Mhàiri [without declension] is frequently found in non-Gaelic communities.
