German and early English form of Laura [q.v.], from Latin "laurel".

Lora appeared in England in the 14^th century. It has recently been overtaken in popularity by the alternative spelling, Laura, which may have been derived from it rather than being directly adopted from the Mediterranean countries where it is the normal spelling.
