English and German, probably derived as a Latinate version of the name of the Greek god Hermes as is Hermione. Hermia and Hermione are therefore classed here as lesser synonyms.

Hermia is also a Latinate version of the German and French name Hermine which is derived from the male name Hermann, from Old German "soldier".
