Cobden (F)>

Cobden (female)

Masculine form:Cobden (M)

Source(s):
Personal commuication [AM]
Notes:

English, a very rare forename that is mainly male in use in England.  One female example has been found in Scotland [AM].

Cobden as a forename is almost certainly the transferred use of the surname.  This is derived from the habitation name which occurs in Devon and in Derbyshire, in England.  The meaning is from Old English for "Cobba's hill".  Cobba was a personal name believed to be from Old Norse for "lump" and hence probably signifying "a large man".

Cobden is combined with the 'middle' name Bright in two examples [one male, one female]. Richard Cobden and John Bright were Radical politicians early in the 19th century.
