Amplias was a Biblical name adopted by pious families in the 18^th and 19^th centuries in Britain and elsewhere.  The origin and meaning are unclear.

A correspondent [LT²] records an ancestor whose birth name was Amplias being recorded as Amphyllis on some official documents although we know of no connection between these two names.
